Problem with Gmail Macros
Posted by james on Nov 15, 12:00 AM
I've been using Gmail Macros (included in the Better Gmail extension) for a while, and it makes such a huge difference in using gmail. The single feature I like the most is the L shortcut to label messages.
However, for quite a while now Gmail Macros has been broken on Firefox, both on my desktop and my laptop. Pressing L will only bring up the label popup 1 out of every 10 times. It's been really annoying, and I finally decided to start troubleshooting it. First, I created a new profile in firefox. I then installed only Better Gmail and restarted. Log into gmail, test... and it works! So that means it must have something to do with my profiles.
The first candidate is my extensions. I have quite a few, so I switch over to my normal profile and disable all the extensions. But this doesn't fix the problem. The next candidate would be plugins, but I'm too lazy to disable those. So I change from the Classic Compact theme I'm using to the Default theme and restart. No go. Then I clear my cache. And it works! Could the theme be interfering?
I switch back to the Classic Compact theme and restart. Gmail Macros are broken again. I then clear the cache, and Gmail Macros work. So something in the process of switching themes leaves some files around that screw up the Macros script. I know that a lot of the themes/extensions deal with Firefox's internal Javascript, so it could have something to do with that.
Whatever it is, clearing the cache worked. The funny thing is, I've cleared my cache before on these machines and not noticed Macros being fixed. It could be a temporary fix, but I'm just glad to have something working again.
Ice Cubes are little Batteries
Posted by james on Sep 15, 11:42 AM
Batteries are little potential-energy storage devices that store energy in a chemical state to release it later.
Ice cubes are little negative batteries. They store a lower state of energy as a chemical (?) state, and "release" it later by sucking heat/energy into itself.
So ice cubes are batteries in reverse. Weird.

For those of you not present, here's the slideshow from the wedding. Turn the speakers up for the music, watch the whole thing through (really!).

A Rocketmonkeys Wedding, take 1
Posted by james on Sep 10, 12:00 AM
The wedding (August 16, 2008) was great. There were some hiccups, like food that took forever, but most of what Lauren and I planned went well and a few things went awesome. The photobooth was a huge hit. That really surprised me; I figured a few of our friends would do it and have fun, instead there was a line of just about everyone waiting to try it. I wish we could have done that more, somehow. Sakonnet Vineyards was amazing, it looked great and the layout was perfect. The weather all that week was partially rainy and overcast, and we were worried for the day of the wedding. As soon as I woke up, I saw bright sun and clear skies; God was looking out for us. Amazingly, some bad weather did head toward us in the later afternoon, but from what I heard it divided in half and went on either side of us, leaving the site beautiful. Amazing.
The food was not at all what Lauren and I wanted. That's especially sad, since food is really what we look forward to. However, that's really the only thing that went wrong. I had made a photobooth, some light-up wheelchair LED's, and a kick-butt slideshow (it'll be up online soon). I managed to keep all of it secret, even while working on them right under Lauren's nose.
One thing I can't say enough about is the ceremony itself. Lauren and I wanted something really short, since usually it's a pain to sit through a boring wrote ceremony and wait till all the fun starts. But Pastor Don was great in his talk, the whole thing was very meaningful, and the music! We had planned on two musicians, but one couldn't make it in time, so we had just the one. I'd asked for Be Thou My Vision in Pedo the Lion style. I got something even better. I can't say enough to thank Jeff and Lisa, it was more than I anticipated and was just beautiful.
Thanks for everyone that was there, and even those that couldn't be but sent their support.
