Consciencious buying

Having an engineering mind, I'm constantly evaluating the world around me. As you can probably tell from the reviews I post up here, I'm very critical when looking at movies, shows, gadgets, etc. I think one of the basic motivations of an engineer is "How does it work?" However, that is quickly followed by "How could it be better?" Therefore a badly designed gadget, or a poorly made movie, or even an undercooked meal is like nails on a chalkboard. It's not just that I can't enjoy selecting a song from an mp3 player designed by retarded fish frogs, but more that all I can think of is how much better it could be.
